A minimalist survival EDC (Everyday Carry) prioritises raw utility and zero waste. It focuses on items that cover major survival rules of 3 (shelter, water, fire, and safety) without weighing you down or cluttering your pockets. [1, 2, 3]

Core Survival Essentials

  • Cutting & Repair: Leatherman Skeletool – Strips down heavy-duty multi-tools to the essentials: pliers, a partially serrated blade, a bit driver, and a carabiner/bottle opener. [1]
  • Fire Starter: Mini Ferrocerium Rod – Can be easily attached to a keychain or lighter to guarantee fire capability even if it gets wet. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Illumination: Micro Flashlight – Options like the ThruNite Ti3 or Wuben G5 provide ample lumen output for urban or wilderness emergencies. [1]
  • Water Access: Purification Tablets – A tiny blister pack of Aquatabs takes up zero space but is crucial for sanitising questionable water.
  • Navigation & Signal: Micro Whistle & Button Compass – Attached to a zipper pull, these provide a low-effort rescue beacon and directional backup. [1]

Daily Carry & Utility

  • Communication & Power: Smartphone & Ultra-Slim Power Bank – Crucial for GPS mapping, emergency calls, and lighting up.
  • Financial Security: Minimalist Metal Wallet or a Money Clip – Kept with a few spare bills and an emergency contact card.
  • First Aid Basics: Pocket Trauma Kit – A single haemostatic gauze or tourniquet tucked into a pocket organiser or carried as an ankle wrap. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Pictured below is my own personal EDC kit. It has changed over the years. I started off with huge amounts of gear, and as my knowledge and understanding have grown, my EDC has become more condensed.

My pouch has 2 main pockets where I keep a basic first-aid kit on one side and a survival kit on the other.

In my kit I have

  • UK legal pocket knife
  • pencil
  • 3 antiseptic wipes
  • lighter
  • plasters
  • triangular bandage
  • wound dressing
  • signal mirror
  • notebook
  • Tobacco tin to store kit below. (with small hole in lid to make char cloth)
  • Sawyer water filter with straw
  • Wire saw
  • pencil sharpener (to make wood shavings for tinder)
