Chemical ignition
Chemical ignition involves highly reactive compounds that produce an exothermic reaction, creating heat or direct flames. While widely discussed in survival literature—like the combination of potassium permanganate and glycerin—these methods are notoriously volatile, dangerous, and usually inappropriate for the wet, unpredictable UK climate. Chemical Ignition Methods
In survival theory, there are two main categories of chemical ignition: hypergolic reactions (two chemicals that combust when mixed) and accelerant use (chemicals used to sustain a spark). [1, 2]
1. Potassium Permanganate & Glycerin

2. Battery & Steel Wool

- How it works: Connecting the terminals of a small battery (like a 9V, AA, or AAA) to fine-grade steel wool causes the iron strands to rapidly oxidise. The electricity creates a short circuit that causes the wool to glow and burn.

3. Chlorate/Perchlorate & Sulfuric Acid (The Match Method)
- How it works: Striking a match is a chemical ignition, as the red phosphorus and chlorate on the box react upon striking. In extreme survival situations, separating these compounds and dropping a tiny amount of sulphuric acid onto chlorate generates instant combustion.

Dangers & UK Limitations

- Unpredictability: Many chemical reactions are explosive rather than gradual.
- Environmental Hazards: Spilling harsh chemicals contaminates the local water table and soil.

Recommended UK Alternatives
Instead of risking chemical reactions, most bushcrafters in the UK rely on mechanical or friction methods that are waterproof and wind-resistant. [1, 2]
- Ferrocerium Rods (Fire Steels): Produces a shower of sparks (up to 3,000°C). They still work when wet.
