Electrical ignition

In a UK survival situation, electrical ignition uses a 12V car battery or portable electronics to create an ember or spark. To start a fire, you use wire, foil, or steel wool to create a short circuit. The intense current causes the metal to glow red-hot, igniting your tinder. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Car Battery Methods

1. Wire Filament Method

  • The Concept: Passing a high current through a thin, high-resistance wire (like a single strand from a copper cable) will cause it to glow red-hot. [1]
  • How-To: Unravel a piece of insulated electrical wire or a jumper cable. Strip the insulation and isolate a single thin copper strand. Hold the wire with sticks to prevent burns, then touch the ends to the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of the battery. The wire will instantly glow; touch it directly to dry tinder, birch bark, or char cloth. [1, 2, 3, 4]

2. Steel Wool (Wire Wool) Method

  • The Concept: Iron wool oxidises and burns incredibly fast when subjected to electrical current.
  • How-To: Fluff up a small piece of fine-grade steel wool. Place it on top of your battery terminals or use a length of wire to bridge the gap between the two terminals. The wool will catch fire instantly. Blow gently on the glowing wool and transfer it to a dry tinder bundle to grow a flame. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Other Electrical Ignition Sources

If you do not have a car battery, common items in a UK roadside or wilderness emergency can be used to generate sparks or heat. [1]

1. Foil Wrapper Short Circuit [1]

  • The Concept: Creates an intense, localised heat point from small batteries.
  • How-To: Use a chewing gum, chocolate, or crisp wrapper that has a foil side. Cut or tear a strip about 0.5 cm wide, trimming the middle so it creates a narrow "V" shape or thin middle section. Touch the foil ends to the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of a 9V, AA, or AAA battery. The narrow middle section will heat up, glow, and ignite the paper backing. [1, 2, 3, 4]

2. The Piezo Igniter

  • The Concept: Generates a high-voltage mechanical spark.
  • How-To: Many portable camping stoves (like the classic Campingaz stoves) use a piezoelectric push-button igniter. If you break open a dead lighter or a portable stove igniter, you can use the striker to generate sparks directly over tinder. [1, 2]

Safety Warnings

  • Explosion Hazard: Lead-acid car batteries emit highly flammable hydrogen gas. Making electrical connections directly at the battery terminals can cause a spark, risking an explosion.
  • Battery Drain: Ensure your electrical modifications do not completely drain the battery if you rely on the vehicle for shelter or heat. [1, 2]
