Types of compass

Orienteering compasses prioritise speed, fast needle stabilisation, and running stability over traditional map-and-dial surveying tools. The two primary styles used in the sport are thumb compasses (for elite and rapid racing) and baseplate compasses (for beginners and training). [1, 2]

1. Thumb Compasses

  • Fixed Capsule (No Bezel): The most popular style for advanced orienteers. They have no degrees or rotating housing, offering a clear, distraction-free view of the map. [1]

2. Baseplate (or Protractor) Compasses

It allows you to align the compass with a distant object in the real world while simultaneously reading the exact degree dial in the mirror’s reflection.
