Filtering water

In a UK survival situation, you must filter sediment from water first, then purify it. Boiling for at least 1 minute is the most reliable method to kill waterborne pathogens like Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and E. coli commonly found in British waterways. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Because even clear UK streams can be contaminated by farm runoff or wildlife, following the correct sequence is crucial: [1]

Step 1: Physical Filtration (Remove Sediment)

Never drink unfiltered, cloudy water, as dirt damages purification equipment and harbours bacteria. [1, 2, 3]

 

  • Improvised Filter: Layer a clean cloth, t-shirt, or bandana with sand, gravel, and crushed charcoal from a dead fire to catch large debris. [1, 2]

Step 2: Purification (Kill Pathogens)

Filtering alone will not remove all viruses or dissolved agricultural chemicals. Always follow up with one of these methods: [1, 2]

 

  • Boiling (The Gold Standard): Bring your filtered water to a rolling boil for a minimum of 1 minute.
  • Chemical Treatment: If you cannot boil water, use food-grade iodine or unscented household bleach (5-6% sodium hypochlorite). Add 2 drops of bleach per litre of clear water and wait 30 minutes before drinking.

Sourcing Best Practices

 

  • Collect water from fast-moving streams or running rivers rather than stagnant pools.
  • Try to gather water upstream from any grazing livestock or human activity to avoid contamination.
  • Rainwater collected directly in clean containers is generally safe to consume without boiling. [1, 2]
